A lot of bloggers, although well out of school, still write "back to school" post for either college students or high school followers. Well this is not that kind of post. This is for those chicks that are unhappy with their professions/careers. I will not tell you to "quit your job and do what you love" bullshit, because you still gotta pay those bills girl. I want to talk about how we can get to do what we love with out being a "starving artist".
I've worked in retail for 10 years and it has always been between operations and creative for me. Since I have more background in operations than creative, I've worked my toosh off to further my career in that field and get to where I am now. Guess what... I fucking hate it!!! But I am not quitting. It's is still a job and the set hours allowed me to get my ass back in school. There is NO SHAME! in being a 30-some year old college student! I've decided to take a step back and look, really look at what would make me happy, to get out of bed and WANT to go to work. And it is not what I'm currently doing. I have always been sure about one thing and it is that I am a visual person and I love to create. So I got off my bum and signed up for a graphic communications certificate program that I can advance into a degree. And I love all the classes that I've taken and can not wait to take the rest (math, tho, yuk!). This program includes graphic design, creative writing, publishing and SO much more. So even if I never use this certificate/degree, the knowledge will benefit my life in many way (and it would help this blog out a bit too 😜).
So, if you are reading this, then you are probably in the same boat as I. With our working girl schedule and finances, Colleges and Universities seam out of reach. Community college though is no secret. They offer a wide range of classes, certificates and degrees. A lot of these programs are aimed at getting you ready for a career. Although it may seam like you are taking a step backwards... really think about it... If you are being proactive about your future, which ever way you go is... forward! My top advice, is research your option, if you are a full time employee, ask if there is tuition assistance or scholarship programs (most companies have this). Seek out an academic advisors, whether you're a student or not, they will still make time to answer all of your question and point you in the right direction. You don't have to know what you want right away, all you need, is to know that you want something else... You may figure that college isn't a necessity for you, there are some professions out there that do not require a deergee. If you want to start a small business for example, you'll probably learn more by practice than in a class room. Utilize the internet, books, go to seminars and dive in to it.
What I'm trying to say here is that in our society very few people can say that they really enjoy what they do. We either go form job to job or get stuck in one for a long time, simply because we think there is no other option. There are options, college is just one of many. Going back to school is hard while you're trying to adult, you may thing you have no time, it's expensive or simply lack of energy. All of these are just excuses that I am guilty of making for too long. I'll be honest with you guys, I am exhausted at the end of the day, but sitting in class, learning about what I am passionate about feels so fulfilling and more like play time than work time.
If you guys have any stories about why you decided to go back or if you're thinking about going back to school but have questions, write me in the comment section. I would really love to read or help. Good day y'all, I hope this inspires you. 😘
